Individual Commitment

  • What led your organization to make the commitment?

    Weak awareness on such within Japanese society.

  • Achievements at a glance

    JCC-DRR formed Gender and DRR sub-committee to look into the issue deeper. This led to organization of multi-stakeholder event on Tsunami Awareness Day, which included both the infrastructure engineering community and NGO community, along with government representatives.

  • How is your organization assessing progress

    The progress is there, but the journey is still ongoing.

  • Challenges faced in implementation

    Getting concrete evidence that speaks the languages of the government and private sector (%, numbers on the impact) was a challenge.

  • Next step to advance implementation in 2017

    Further organization of various events that lead to enhancing awareness on the importance of gender and social inclusiveness in emergency preparedness and response in Japan.

  • If you had one message for the annual report on what is most needed to advance the transformation 'Empower and protect women and girls', what would it be

    Ensuring the right of women and girls is the same as upholding humanity in our work.

Enable adolescents and young people to be agents of positive transformation

Individual Commitment

  • What led your organization to make the commitment?

    Youth is not well represented in DRR policy dialogue in Japan.

  • Achievements at a glance

    JCC-DRR formed the Youth Empowerment sub-committee, and the group is working proactively to represent JCC-DRR in events such as Sendai DRR Futures Forum. The group is planned and implemented by youth, and JCC-DRR is providing organizational and financial back-up to the group.

  • How is your organization assessing progress

    Progress is definitely being made, but again, the journey is still ongoing.

  • Challenges faced in implementation

    Attracting donors/investors for such long-term nurturing of leadership is quite a challenge.

  • Next step to advance implementation in 2017

    JCC-DRR would make sure that this group continues, and that it attracts many more youth to tag along.

    Investing in youth is investing in our tomorrow.

Anticipate, do not wait, for crises

    The spirit of Sendai Framework for DRR on proactively understanding and reducing disaster risk is not practiced in many industries.

  • Achievements at a glance

    '10 Lessons from Fukushima Reducing Risks and Protecting Communities from Nuclear Disasters' is now available in 14 languages. For details please see https://fukushimalessons.jp/en-booklet.html.

  • How is your organization assessing progress

    Communication platform and networks to disseminate lessons from Fukushima.

  • Challenges faced in implementation

    Some of these discussions are still seen as political, but we are ensuring that lessons are communicated from purely from DRR perspectives.

    3 more languages are underway for 10 Lessons from Fukushima booklet.

Deliver collective outcomes: transcend humanitarian-development divides

  • What led your organization to make the commitment?

    The divide between development and humanitarian is often referred to and talked about, but for communities, this divide doesn't mean anything.

  • Achievements at a glance

    JCC-DRR formed the Multi-sector Collaboration sub-committee which focuses on implementation of the innovation agenda of WHS.

  • How is your organization assessing progress

    JCC-DRR is attracting private sector, local government, and various networks on the initiative.

  • Challenges faced in implementation

    When trying new things, existing financial schemes do not always apply.

  • Next step to advance implementation in 2017

    JCC-DRR together with other networks such as ADRRN would promote innovation in Japan and in the wider Asian region in the field of DRR and humanitarian response.

    In order to make things better, we have no choice but to 'solve the unsolved'.
